Starting your BSc in Geology is easy!
Core Courses
All Geology students begin by taking two core geology courses:
Most students begin taking the geology core courses during their first year at Canterbury, but students who discover an interest in geology later can also take the core courses during their second year.
Optional Course
One optional first year geology course is also offered for students interested in this particular topics:
- GEOL 113 Environmental Geohazards
This course may be substituted for GEOL 111 or GEOL 112 by students wishing to proceed to second year studies in Geology, but only with a grade of B+ and approval from the Head of the Department. Other courses you take at first year are up to you. For an overview of the BSc degree programme and other courses offered please take a moment to review our other courses and subjects.
Other Courses
In addition to the above two core geology courses a student wishing to major in Geology or Engineering Geology (the latter needs 15 points from Mathematics) should take at least another 45 points from 100 level courses in the BSc schedule.
For example, first-year students planning to major in geology with an interest in geography need to take 8 courses/papers in 100 level of which at least 5 papers are in Science. You might choose the following courses:
