Research Interest

  • System-wide integrative approaches to emergency response and recovery, including
  • Inter-disciplinary collaborative approaches to operational research
  • Integrating research and operational response and recovery after multi-regional New Zealand disasters
  • Hazard management in small, high-hazard New Zealand communities (particularly tourist resorts)

Background

After completing a Ph D at the University of Melbourne in 2000, Sarah worked in tertiary student support for ten years, first at Lincoln University, and - since 2004 - at the University of Canterbury. During this time involvement in organizational emergency and crisis management, together with founding roles in collaborative projects (including the multi-agency Christchurch Safer student campaign) contributed to a growing interest in hazard and disaster management. In 2010 involvement in joint research projects in the Natural Hazards Centre led to a move into fulltime hazards research. In early March Sarah was seconded from the Centre to work for six months for the national Natural Hazards Platform.
