Thesis

Assessment of multi-hazard impacts on regional infrastructure and consequent implications for isolated settlements and their communities.

Many remote settlements are dependent upon regional critical infrastructure and so are vulnerable to infrastructure losses resulting from natural hazards.  Advances in technology and changes in society continue to reduce the self-sufficiency of communities by increasing their reliance upon regional infrastructure.  Therefore, communities in isolated settlements are not only vulnerable to proximal hazards, but also distal hazards that affect regional infrastructure, even if the community is not directly affected.  Reducing infrastructure vulnerability can increase community resilience and reduce response and recovery times following a disaster.  My PhD is aiming to analyse the vulnerability of infrastructure within multi-hazard environments, which will help us assess how best to increase resilience associated with regional infrastructure.
